What this page used to say. An earlier version described Mehmet at AmgBahis’s live roulette table, typing "come on red!" in the chat while his ₺25,000 sat on black: the ball stops on 26 black, he keeps betting black and the night ends above ₺1,050,000. In the next paragraph the man who withdrew the money and bought his mother a house is suddenly called "Emre", so the story cannot even keep its hero’s name. It also recommended the Martingale and "feeling the dealer’s rhythm". None of it can be checked; it has been removed.

The numbers on a European wheel

A European roulette wheel has 37 pockets: 18 red, 18 black and one green zero. An even-money bet such as red or black wins with a probability of 18/37, or 48.65%. The zero makes the difference: the house edge is 1/37, or 2.70%. On the old story’s ₺25,000 bet, that is an expected loss of about ₺676 per spin. Some tables return half of an even-money bet when zero comes up (the la partage rule), which halves the edge to 1.35%; whether it applies is stated in the table rules.

Why the ₺1,050,000 night needs a streak

₺1,050,000 ÷ ₺25,000 = 42. Putting the whole balance on black every time, that takes at least six wins in a row (five wins make 32 times the stake, not enough). (18/37) to the power of 6 is about 1.3%, roughly 1 in 75. Not impossible; but 74 of every 75 nights played that way end at zero, and those nights are never told. Live tables also publish maximum bets for each bet type, so whether even-money bets of that size were allowed at that table could be checked against its limits.

Streaks, the history board and the Martingale

The board of recent results on screen looks like a forecasting tool, but the ball has no memory: after five reds, black is still 18/37. The same goes for "the dealer’s rhythm"; no method based on watching the table changes the 2.70%. The Martingale the old article recommended, doubling the stake after every loss, works like this with a ₺100 starting bet:

All of that risk is taken to win ₺100. The Martingale wins small amounts often and loses a large amount rarely; the house edge stays at 2.70%. A run of seven losses comes roughly once in every 106 attempts, and the table limit or the balance usually runs out before that. At live tables a slip costs more, too: once betting closes, the bet on the table stands, so check where your chips are before the spin starts.
